Sports Massage Surrey
What is sports and remedial massage?
Sports massage is a no-nonsense massage technique that has been developed to deal with the conditions that the human body experiences before and after being pushed to its limits. For athletes this may be a hard training session or a race. For anyone it could be a body cramped up over a computer for eight long hours. Or after period of hard physical work.
Our muscles are covered by a layer of connective tissue called fascia. It is like a wrapper binding individual muscle fibres, large bundles of muscles and whole muscle groups. When covering healthy muscle it is a soft, gel like substance. But when our muscle movement is restricted by an injury or bad posture, tissue fluids cannot reach the areas they need to in order to lubricate the fascia. The fascia hardens and scar tissue forms, further trapping toxins and waste materials. This causes pain and dysfunction as the body tries to remedy the situation. There will be a series of structural compensations; often leading to further pain and more problems.
Sports massage uses a combination of hands on massage strokes and physiotherapy techniques to relieve pain and encourage healing. A sports and remedial massage is just as relevant to an office worker crippled by an unsuitable desk arrangement as it is to a runner suffering a torn hamstring.
Sports Massage Techniques
Soft Tissue Release is used to stretch localised tight areas within muscles and tendons. It is useful in breaking down scar tissue left behind after injury. I will ask you to help me by moving your limb while I apply pressure to areas of compromised tissue.
Muscle Energy Technique lengthens shortened muscles and can also be helpful in ‘switching on’ and strengthening weak muscles. You will participate in your treatment by moving against my resistance.
Neuromuscular Technique treats trigger points and tight areas in the muscle with pressure to allow them to release. I will ask you for feedback as I provide controlled pressure to problem areas.
Your first appointment.
New clients are requested to come for one hour on their initial visit. A short health questionnaire is completed to establish your general health and reasons for requiring sports massage. I will observe your posture and perform simple tests to establish how to approach your treatment. The rest of the time is taken up with hands on massage. Finally I will recommend any exercises or self-help techniques to be done at home and discuss follow up sessions.
I will explain what I’m doing as I go along and value feedback so please don’t hesitate to ask questions. Clients are covered with towels throughout the treatment and your modesty is always respected.
I work with osteopaths at my clinic and we are experienced at dealing with most types of pain and injuries. If I feel anything is beyond me I will refer you to the right person so you can get the specific treatment you need.

After suffering from chronic bad back pain for as long as I could remember I was recommended to visit Trudy and her relaxed manner and amazing knowledge of the body really helped me work to correct my posture and home-working setup and I’m seeing great results already
I decided to take up active exercise and found I was suffering from regular aches and pains in my shoulders. After a few quick sessions with Trudy I realised that I actually had tissue damage and needed to change my exercise routine. With new strengthening exercises I am able to complete an exercise class without the recurring pain
I have been running pretty much all my adult life and time has taken its toll on my joints and my recovery time between events has been greatly reduced which has left my training schedule almost non-existent so when I visited Trudy and she was able to help me reduce my recovery time it was like having my youth given back to me. I have now completed 5 more marathons that I thought I wouldn’t have been able to do!
