There are some good mixed terrain routes when you run in Sutton Surrey.
Two of my favourite runs in Sutton Surrey start from the sports massage clinic at Westcroft Leisure Centre Carshalton. Runners can book a sports massage here. From Westcroft Road you can run straight along the A232 to the Sutton one way system where you can bear left and travel south to Belmont . Or you can bear north, running through Sutton itself down Throwley Way. This run in Sutton Surrey takes you past the rear of the shopping centre.

Run in Sutton Surrey via Belmont and Carshalton Beeches

If you are going to Belmont take Brighton Road. Pass Sutton train station and progress up the long easy hill to Belmont station. At this point turn left into Downs Road which takes you up to the Royal Marsden Hospital Sutton. From here you can continue on through the back of The Oaks golf course. Keep out of the way of the golfers as you continue to Oaks Park by choosing one of several public footpaths. These can get quite wet and muddy in winter so take it easy as you don’t want to risk an injury.

Those who prefer a drier route can miss out the golf course and park and run down Banstead Road South to Carshalton Beeches instead. There are no shortage of Sutton running routes that are completely on road. From Carshalton Beeches it is easy to run straight through into Carshalton village and back to the Westcroft Centre.

From Sutton to Carshalton via Oaks Park

Oaks Park is a mecca for runners and dog walkers. Many cyclists also take advantage of the trails and footpaths there. The Oaks Park café is a pleasant place to stop for those who fancy a break or a bottle of water. Oaks Park is a large area and runners can take advantage of hill sessions and speed work. I often see groups of young runners from the Sutton and District club training there on Sunday mornings.

From the bottom of Oaks Park cross Woodmansterne Road by the horse and pedestrian lights and take the drive up to the Diamond Riding Centre. From their main entrance you can enter the footpath on the right which proceeds up the hill into Queen Mary’s Park. This attractive and varied parkland was the gardens of the now demolished Queen Mary’s Hospital for Children. Stanley Park High School and a housing estate occupy the rest of the old hospital lands.

You are now in Carshalton on the Hill. It is a short run through Stanley Park and  Carshalton Park back to the Westcroft Leisure Centre and your sports massage.

Sutton to Carshalton via Rose Hill

If it is a wet day I would choose a road route to run in Sutton Surrey. Go north through Sutton town centre. At the bottom of Throwley Way proceed around the Sutton one way system. Go up the High Street towards Angel Hill. This road soon becomes Rose Hill and takes you past the Sutton Tennis Academy on the left. Rose Hill Park East is further up on the right. This is another favoured venue for hill and interval sessions.

At the Rose Hill roundabout turn right into Wrythe Lane. After the shops pass the imposing white building of St Helier hospital. The hospital was built in 1938 in thirties modernism style. Wrythe Lane is a long downhill stretch which takes you through the St Helier housing estate and on to Carshalton. You pass down historic West Street with its old wooden houses and the Hope and Racehorse pubs. Make a note to visit both another day. Carshalton Station is up the slip road on the left.

From Carshalton High Street quickly trot left through Carshalton village to the Westcroft Leisure Centre. Hot showers and changing facilities await. You can buy something to eat and drink at the café next to reception. Trudy Kuhn, your sports massage therapist, offers excellent sports and remedial massage in The Surrey Health Spa within the centre.
